Each and every one of us have a combination of learning-styles we adhere to. Because of these different types, we don’t all learn the same which is why it is so important to know what type of learner you are so you can use the techniques best suited for you.

Then you have active learner tendencies. Because active learners like learning to let them participate in activities and be interesting. Which is why you will have a kid who can remember every stat and name of his favorite baseball team, but can’t will never remember anything about the state capitals. Because one is active and can be discussed with friends while the other is taught dryly with no entertainment value.

1. Find a way to discuss the subject with others.

This could be anyone, but it is preferable to have someone who knows as much as you do and has an interest in the subject, or is a subject matter expert. This could be someone who studies it themselves or is a professional in the business. The key is to find someone who you can talk with who can expand what you’re studying as well as put it in a realistic perspective of how it works in practice.

A key provision of this strategy is finding a mentor who will consistently work with you to expand your knowledge as you learn the practice of what you’re trying to learn. 1. Figure out your optimal ratio of learning to breaking.

Reflective learners are notorious for having gestation periods where they need to take the information and let it develop and digest. These can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days.

The key here is to find out how long your gestation period is by experimenting with your own mind. Meaning you research the information and try to learn it. Then take a break to find out how long it takes to digest the information. You can find out your best combination of learning to digesting by choosing to learn something for a certain amount of time and then measuring how long it takes before you know it.

A Good Example:

Study for an hour. Break for an hour. See what you remember.

Repeat using 2 hours of study to 1 hour of breaking.

Another technique is to think of ways you could apply this information to the real world and what you do on a regular basis. This will help cement the information to concrete examples.

4. Write summaries (How-To Lists) of what you learn in your own words.

Take in new information, learn it, apply it to gain experience, and then finally write a blog about it to show your understanding.



Relearning Makes for the Best Learning: Tapping Into the Power of Retrieval

Have you ever had the following experience? You just learned something the other day–or maybe it was even earlier today–and someone asks you a question about the topic. You know you know the answer, but as you open your mouth to answer the question, you stop. Nothing comes out. You squeeze your eyes shut and put your hands over your ears, hoping to shut out everything except your thinking as you struggle to find the answer. You might even say out loud something like, “Wait… wait… I know this!” It’s right there, right on the tip of your tongue, but somehow you can’t spit it out.

Sound familiar? Sure! We’ve all experienced this “tip-of-the-tongue” phenomenon. This common occurrence points out a simple fact about learning and using that learning in your life. And that fact is, there’s a difference between encoding (getting the learning in there in the first place) and retrieval (being able to get it out in usable form when you need it). Clearly, being able to retrieve the learning is just as important as the encoding. After all, what use is the learning if you can’t retrieve it when you need it?

But retrieval is actually much more important in the learning process than this simple explanation makes it sound like. In fact, retrieval plays a major role in consolidating and strengthening the representations of learned material in the brain, and as such, it must be taken into account by teachers if they want to maximize their students’ learning.

How Retrieval Increases Learning

Memory is not as straight forward of a process as most people think. (In fact, memory is not really even a single process. There are actually a number of different processes the brain uses to learn and retain information that we lump together under the umbrella term of “memory,” but we’ll leave that discussion for another day.) One of the aspects of memory about which most people, even most teachers, are unaware is the powerful role played by retrieval.

We store (encode and consolidate) a great deal of information in our brains over our lifetimes. Our long-term memory capacity (unlike our working memory capacity) is virtually limitless, so we don’t have to worry that we will run out of room to store new learning. However, since we can only actually “bring to mind” (that is, bring into conscious working memory) a vanishingly small fraction of that total at a time, the rest must remain unaccessed (unconscious).

The longer it has been since you attempted to access any particular part of your long-term memory, the more difficult it may be to retrieve that information when you need it. On the flip side, the more frequently you recall a particular slice of long-term memory, the stronger those retrieval routes will become, and the easier it will be to retrieve that information the next time you need it. Thus, the periodic retrieval of learning strengthens the pathways to that information and simultaneously weakens the pathways to competing memories. Bottom line? The more often you retrieve something from memory, the more solid the learning.

There are a number of powerful implications for teaching and learning to be taken from the research on memory retrieval, but I will just mention two today. Everything I’m about to cover in the paragraphs to follow has been proven over and over again in scientific studies and in classroom situations.

Interleaved Practice Beats Massed Practice

“Interleaving” is the practice of teaching two or more subjects, skills, or problem types in an alternating (interleaved) fashion. Let’s say an English teacher needs to teach some comma rules, the proper use of the semi-colon, and how to use quotation marks. The traditional way of teaching these three topics would be through massed practice. That is, the teacher might teach the comma rules on one day for thirty minutes. The next day, she might teach semi-colons for thirty minutes. The following day she might teach quotation marks for thirty minutes.

Now, a teacher using an interleaved approach might teach the use of a particular comma rule for ten minutes, then move on to teach for ten minutes on the use of semi-colons, and then teach for another ten minutes on properly using quotation marks. The next day, the teacher again spends ten minutes on each skill, and then does the same thing again the next day. In the two scenarios given here (massed vs. interleaved practice), the teacher using the second (interleaved) approach will get far superior results, even though the total amount of time spent teaching each skill is the same.

This is true because, in the massed practice example, students are primarily using working memory as they work with the material. They learn some comma rules on day one, and they practice, practice, practice. But they haven’t consolidated any of this learning yet, so they aren’t actually retrieving anything from long-term memory. And the next day, the teacher is moving them on to something else, and they repeat the process with different material. They don’t, however, get to retrieve the material on commas.

In the second scenario, students just start to get a grasp on a particular rule, but then they are moved on to another topic. Over the course of the next day and night, they consolidate what they encoded concerning each skill, and when they are asked to return to that material the next day, they are forced to retrieve what they have consolidated, and now the teacher adds a new piece of information onto what they learned the day before, and they get to practice some more. This interleaved approach thus allows time for consolidation to take place, plus it forces retrieval the next day, which also strengthens the pathways to the previous learning.

In order to make the students in your class enjoy learning, provide adequate learning resources, meaning that the learning resources not only available but also varies.

With the availability of the learning resources (which are varied and adequate), students will be motivated to learn. Learning resources are provided, first of all is that they support the curriculum, as well as related to self-development and/or career development.

Learning resources provided should indeed be in the classroom, not just in the library. Learning resources can be goods referred to printable materials, audio recording, and videos.

The more diverse and more complete the learning resources available in the class, the better the effect on the students’ interest in learning. Thus, students become to enjoy learning.

5. Provide assistance to students who struggle to learn

One more thing that can arouse students’ interest in learning is the availability of the help to learning. The help to learning can come from the classroom teacher, or this could be from another teacher who is assigned to help students who are having problems to learn or facing learning difficulties.

When students encounter learning problems, they need the help to get more understanding. But when the help that is needed is missing, they will stop learning. So, keep in mind to always be on the side of your students to help them overcome their difficulties in learning.



How to Learn Any Subject?

Learning is such a critical aspect of one’s life. In essence life is a major school. At every stage of life, from birth to adulthood, learning takes place in various modalities. There is a difference though between structured or formal learning and what I call “fun learning” or passive learning. For example, the type of learning that takes place when one is reading an enjoyable text or watching a favorite movie or documentary. This is not to mitigate the value of this type of learning but to call attention to the phenomenon that usually the learning extracted is not preplanned or based on specific outcomes. Consequently, the learning opportunity may be more expendable. The keys to learning effectively are purpose, self-awareness, and organization. The precursors to this triad include the skills and background knowledge necessary to create the path for effective learning.

For our purpose here, we’ll be discussing structured learning as it the most reliable and standardized. By the time a child enters kindergarten, he has already been exposed to some structured learning environment albeit without his conscious knowledge. He/she may already be using the word “school” nonchalantly. Kindergarten may even be more structured and may be categorized as “real” learning, perhaps because this is the place for the foundation of literacy skills. Most people tend to have fond memories about their experiences as a kindergartener. Thus, it qualifies the purpose aspect of effective learning. This may be a residue of the type of learning inherent in wanting to walk as a child, feed oneself, figuring out how to reach the high shelf, or tie one’s shoe laces.

Purpose is synonymous with motivation in this context. The greater one’s desires or goals towards achieving a certain outcome are, the greater the purpose. Purpose is the reason one is engaged in studying something in particular. Identifying the purpose may be easier if the endeavor is self-induced or voluntary. In the case of an involuntary situation, it is even more important to identify a purpose. It is effective pedagogical practice to guide young learners in a conversation about the objectives for learning about a particular topic and connect those to their previous knowledge.

First things first, knowing the purpose for doing anything is essential. This must be deliberate and intentional. We always have choices even when it seems like we don’t. They may be difficult choices with pleasant or unpleasant consequences. When a learner finds himself with a prescribed course which he feels is “useless”, “irrelevant ” or “boring”, he has the option of not taking the course or create an objective or purpose that is personally authentic and relevant to himself at the onset of the course. For example:” I don’t like French. I am not good at foreign languages, but I like history.” So a possible question to ask to formulate your purpose is: What is the role of France, its people and the language in the history of _____? You fill in the blank. Another point of focus could be the French language of today vs. yesterday.

Authenticity and interests are quintessential here. The learner has to take responsibility to define his own purpose for studying something based on his interests, academic and or social strengths, or just a pure desire or goal to do well. The point here is that the learner has to establish a reason for studying something, which could be as specific or as generic as he wants it. However, it must resonate with a core aspect of personality or value or both.

This brings us to the next requirement- self-awareness. The learner can use these questions as a guide: Who are you as a personality? What matters to you? What do you value? How did you learn what you learned before? What techniques did you use? Knowing “thyself” is one of the best given advices. This is a lifetime quest but we start by paying attention to ourselves and reflecting consistently. Tools such as multiple intelligence, IQ, and emotional intelligence tests can provide some insights and directions. Take responsibility for your own learning. Some environments and teaching methodologies are more optimized for learning. However, the greatest responsibility still lies with you. After the learner has satisfactorily answered the questions he has to apply the findings. For example, an extrovert needs to ask questions and engage in discussions and find alternate, lively tools to engage with the materials if the instructor doesn’t provide them. An introvert may need to take copious notes and engage in discussions in small groups. This brings us to the third component of effective learning- organization.
